Obstetrics (from the Latin obstare, "to stand by") is the surgical specialty dealing with the care of a woman and her offspring during pregnancy, childbirth and the puerperium (the period shortly after birth). Gynecology is the surgical specialty dealing with health of the female reproductive system. The literal translation of the word is "the science of women."
In most modern practitioners (and medical schools) Obstetrics and Gynecology are combined, yielding medical professionals with expertise in both the health of the female reproductive system and the processes of pregnancy and childbirth.
