Gastroenterology is a medical specialty that focuses on the digestive system. The word comes from the Greek words for stomach (gastros) and intestine (enteron). Gastroenterologists study the entire gastrointestinal (G.I.) tract and digestive process, from eating to waste elimination. They are specialists of the stomach, intestines and various organs involved in the digestion of food.
